Gilgit   is the   capital city Gilgit  baltistan   it is the most populated district   within the   Gilgit  Baltistan   territory of   Pakitan . The town of Gilgit constitutes tehsil   within Gilgit District. The town's ancient name was  Sargin , later to be known as  Gilit , and it is still referred to as  Gilit  or  Sargin-Gilit  by local people.
